Newsletter for January 2007

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone and welcome back

GENERAL MEETING: Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 9:30am at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 East Alameda Ave. Remember that we meet on the 3rd Saturday at 9:30am.

Your furnished name tags should to be worn to each meeting because if you wear it and your signup number is called out by a guest you win $5!  The Hello stick’em tags are only for guests!!!  In November Ann Hanscom won the $5.00 and Carmen Freeman won the newsletter prize.

The PROGRAM will be a critique by Joanne Burney (pastellist). Remember one (1) unframed artwork per member of DAAG. No guest paintings can be included in this critique.

Review of last month’s (November) program was an excellent and fun time by all members who attended. Judy Patti gave a short demo on the use of encaustic and how simply and easily one could produce a picture, card, etc. Matt ‘L’s were available to show off our handiwork - Judi provided paper and slick ads from magazines, Encaustic waxes in the colors each table needed - encaustic irons were aplenty, brought by many members and Judy. It was just plain fun and we all produce many finished pieces. A critique was the fun part because Judy showed and told what was great about the painting.  Judy might offer a workshop (in her studio) on encaustic - we will let you know.

Review of the Christmas Party:  It was well attended by some 22 members and their spouse or friends at Marion Wright’s. “It was a large Yuletide group in a party mood. The honey-baked ham and roast turkey were delicious as were the pot-luck delicacies. As expected, the Chinese Auction was good fun with Tony McCrary conducting and often attempting to steal someone’s’ cherished present.”      Ann Hanscom reporting.

From Carol Reeves’  retreat to Winter Park - there were 7 who enjoyed this painting outing. Heavy snow on the first day, some turned back then drove back the next day for a great get-together.

Just a reminder - all of you have received the packet regarding our showing and jurying in at Curtis Arts & Humanities Center. The delivery date is Wednesday, January 31st at 9:00 - 10:00am. The instructions, etc were in your mailing.

Our web site is www.daagonline.com is up and running with Karl Johnson our webmaster. To set up a member page, update your page, or have new photos taken of your artwork call Joyce Madden at 303-771-2019 and make arrangements. Slides and/or photos can be sent directly to Karl and he will get them online. Be sure to include a short (5 or 6 lines) biographical note. A fee of $25.00 to each member will give that member a page of 6 paintings plus the bio. There are links to agencies, retail outlets (Meininger’s, etc), and organizations. Once your page is up and approved, your $25.00 is due. If you want to change one picture in your web site that is free, any more than that there is a flat fee of $25.00. Karl’s address is 2423 S. Yarrow Way, Lakewood, CO 80227 - phone: 303-980-0501 - email: Karl@colorado-artist.com.

You need to get your updated resumés (form layouts are available) and photos of at least three (3) of your artwork to Joyce Madden and if you have something for the Historian book you can bring that along and give to Floy Walberg. Our History book is wonderful and if you haven’t taken a look thru it, please do.

A note from a friend who just returned from Italy: “By-the-way, while it was fun to see the Mona Lisa, the display setup makes it almost impossible to really enjoy it. The painting sits behind thick, high-glare glass and you are kept a good ten feet away from it at best. Since most of the pocketcam (cameras) shooters had their flashes on, they probably all came home to big white spots on their photos.”

Addition to your membership book:

Cathy Casey

The next Board Meeting will be Friday, January 26, 3:00pm at Ann Hanscom’s.

“The shaping of forms is one area where many artists get into trouble In the old days studens were encouraged to paint and draw cones, pyramids, blocks and spheres until they were blue in the face. It’s no wonder that so many of the classically trained painters knew how to render form. Today, for those who would master form, there is no recourse but to study and practice.

Many commonplace subjects such as rocks, clouds and faces follow the simple dictates of those classic shapes. They need to be seen as “forms under light”........”   This is just one from the twice weekly letter from Robert Genn. This was from his November 17th letter.

Shhhhhhhhh

Out of courtesy for our demonstrators/speakers, please refrain from talking during the program. You have plenty of time to converse with your friends at the break, before and after the meeting.

Please keep the meeting room clean as you found it - also it would be helpful if you would put your chair back in its original position when you leave.
