[] Drawing is a form of visual expression and is one of the major forms within the visual arts.

The word 'drawing' is used as both a verb and a noun:

• Drawing (verb) is the act of making marks on a surface so as to create an image, form or shape.

• The produced image is also called a drawing (noun). If somewhat complex, may be defined as a sketch.

Drawing is distinct from painting. The techniques of "drawing" and "painting" when confused, is generally

because similar tools can perform both tasks. But the operations are distinct in that painting generally involves

the layering of pigments by means of a brush onto cloth or prepared surfaces, whereas drawing is generally

concerned with the marking of dark lines onto paper.

The act of drawing also suggests a process that is distinct from the traditional act of painting. The drawing

process is often exploratory, with considerable emphasis on observation, problem solving and composition. In

contrast, traditional painting is often a means of execution or finishing an artwork once a drawing has been

completed. It is fair to note that modern painters often incorporate methods of drawing in their painting process.

[] Subject matter

Madame Palmyre with Her Dog, 1897. .

Drawings may be representational, depicting objects or scenes which the artist views, remembers, or imagines.

They may be realistic to the point of lifelike resemblance (e.g. traditional ),architectural drawing or looser approximations of reality, and highly stylized.

[] Media

The medium is the means by which ink, pigment, or color are delivered onto the drawing surface. Most drawing media are either dry (e.g. graphite, charcoal, , , ), or water-based (marker, pen and ink). Watercolor pencils can be used dry like ordinary pencil, then moistened with a wet brush to get various painterly effects.

[] Materials

Paper comes in a variety of different sizes and qualities, ranging from newspaper grade for practice up to high quality and relatively expensive paper sometimes sold as individual sheets. Papers can vary in texture, hue, acidity, and strength when wet. Smooth paper is good for rendering fine detail, but a more "toothy" paper will hold the drawing material better. Thus a more coarse material is useful for producing deeper contrast.

For pen and ink work, typing paper is often used for practice drawings, but heavier paper holds up better. Bristol board makes a hard surface that is especially good for ink or fine detailed graphite drawing. Coldpressed watercolor paper is sometimes favored for ink drawing due to its texture. Tracing vellum is often used for experimenting on top of a pencil drawing, prior to committing a technique to the final page.

Various tools are routinely used in the process of drawing. Other tools that sometimes prove useful. The use of an easel or slanted table reduces the distorting effects of perspective.

Review of last month’s program: we had a wonderful and learning critique of our work in progress by Lori Williamson. She recommended finding the positives in each painting and then suggesting changes to improve the design, color, etc. Three members (Carmen, Marion and Sharon) brought abstracts that captured our attention with their color and technique! Floy Walberg  reporting.

Our web site, www.daagonline.com, is up and running with Karl Johnson our webmaster. To set up a member page, update your page, or have new photos taken of your artwork call Joyce Madden at 303-771-2019 and make arrangements. Slides and/or photos can be sent directly to Karl and he will get them online. Be sure to include a short (5 or 6 lines) biographical note. A fee of $25.00 to each member will give that member a page of 6 paintings plus the bio. There are links to agencies, retail outlets (Meininger’s, etc), and organizations. Once your page is up and approved, your $25.00 is due. If you want to change one picture in your web site that is free. For any more than that there is a flat fee of $25.00. Karl’s address is 2423 S. Yarrow Way, Lakewood, CO 80227 - phone: 303-980-0501 - email: Karl@colorado-artist.com. See enclosed form that is to be used.

Montview Presbyterian Church - Rosemary and Al Weiler will go to the church on Saturday, June 16th (early) and pickup all the paintings and bring to the DAAG meeting that day. If you cannot attend this June meeting and you have a painting at Montview, you need to call Rosemary and set up a time when you can pick it up at her home.

And thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, to Ann Hanscom, Roland Jones, Ardath and Al Weiler for hanging the pictures and greeting all the participants from Rosemary Weiler. Al even went the Millie Wilner’s home to pick up her painting.

You need to get your updated resumés (form layouts are available) and photos of at least three (3) of your artwork to Joyce Madden and if you have something for the Historian book you can bring that along and give to Floy Walberg. Our History book is wonderful and if you haven’t taken a look thru it, please do.

Please keep the meeting room clean as you found it - also it would be helpful if you would put your chair back in its original position when you leave.
